History of
Sevastopol. The name which has Greek origin and is translated "magnificent,
city of glory"
Term: Sevastopol [origin of place name]
Definition: The town was organized November 17, 1859. Its first name was Lau-
rieville. This name did not suit the farmers of the town... Sebastopol was suggest-
ed by J.P. Simon as a fitting suggestion of the town's future greatness. This name
was adopted... An error in the spelling occurred and thus we have Sevastopol.

If you are wondering about the origin of "Sevastopol," it is the namesake of a
feisty Southern Russian port on the Black Sea, originally "Sebastopol" which in
1855 withstood and was victorious in a tussle with the British and French.
Through a slip of the pen, "v" was substituted for the "b."
